Graphic Designers Home
There has never been a time in history when graphic design has been more to the fore. The World Wide Web is awash with the work of graphic designers. Animation in film and the use of printed material such as brochures and glossy magazines all require the services of graphic designers. These professionals are involved in type, images and moving pictures and their work opportunities havenever been greater.
The advertising industry is involved in the production of materials for campaigns which can cost millions and graphic designers play a vital role in much of what we see in ads in all formats. There are tertiary courses as well as sessions run by technical colleges all directed at teaching the skills involved in graphic design.
Of course technical knowledge is one thing but imagination and creativity is quite another. Having ideas and ones which are different, challenging and effective is a quality which sets the top designers apart from the others. Great ideas and great design produce the ultimate work.
Who needs a graphic designer?
Well almost anyone in business and elsewhere as well. Let’s start with a company wanting a brand name, a logo or corporate image. The company wants to establish a mood or reputation be it serious, edgy, conservative, funky or whatever. The designer’s job is to capture the mood required by the company but at the same time come up with material which is eye-catching, memorable and likely to promote the business.
Anyone in business will have a web presence with a web site and possibly a blog. Starting a web site from scratch can be a tough ask. What services does the company offer? What products does it sell? What functions do you want the web site to offer to customers? And finally what image do you want to portray to the world? All of these questions and more need to be asked and then answered by a graphic designer.
Be different
Every business wants a unique image. It wants to stand out. It needs to market itself in a simple and crystal clear way. And all these requirements can be met and managed by some outstanding graphic design. A logo, an image, one word or catch cry can tell so much in so small a way. This is the basis of the genius of graphic design.
Think of certain famous brands and how simple their promotional image is today. Nike has a √ and Apple has, well an apple. Those billion dollar companies are sold to the world with one simple, straightforward symbol.
But just think how memorable that symbol has become. What a great idea you think, and all because a graphic designer hit on the idea.
Try this experiment. Spend an hour looking around you. Look at newspapers, magazines, TV, billboards, the sides of buses and trams, neon signs, flyers and brochures. Everything or almost everything you see has been created by a graphic designer. Their work is everywhere and their work will go on expanding as long as business is conducted.
